Maria Rivans
''Marianne'' Limited edition print of surrealistic collage with diamond dust

2019

About the Item

Maria Rivans is a contemporary British artist, known for her scrapbook-style collage aesthetic. A mash-up of Surrealism meets Pop-Art, Rivans’s work re-appropriates vintage ephemera to create dreamy realms, which transport the viewer into fantastical worlds of the imaginary. Each one finished with a dusting of subtle humor. In her pin-up series, Maria Rivans reclaims iconic femininity to champion female strength. Her exotic and escapist works are often laced with ominous undertones, to remind us of the darker side of human nature. ‘Marianne’ depicts Swedish actress Anita Ekberg, her emerald eyes and ice-pink lips picked out from the vintage photograph. An explosive concoction of collaged elements, Marianne depicts life aquatic, building up from a delicately woven collar of spiky sea anemones, through marine biology and up to coastal commotion, where garlanded girls frolic in the waves. But watch out for the ocean’s darker side: woven amongst soft seaweeds and colourful clownfish, a host of perils await, from vicious sharks to carnivorous creatures, lurking in the deep. Marianne is a metaphor of the contrast we experience in our lives, just like the life the creatures experience on our beautiful savage planet. Through an intense attention to detail and an artistic sensitivity to color and composition, each of Rivans’ artworks is the product of months of careful deliberations and decisions, every tiny tweak necessary in the final formation. Maria Rivans works from her studio in Brighton and exhibits throughout the UK. Her work is also highly appreciated internationally. Her colorful collages can be seen from New York to Hong Kong. ''Marianne'' has an edition of 60.

  • ''Musis Sacrum'' Hand-colored etching with Gold Leaf, An Ode to Music
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Different worlds are melted together in the remarkable etches of Dutch artist Gea Karhof. Ancient cultures go hand in hand with 20th century icons. It is possible to see Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse or Superman swimming among oriental figures. On the many journeys to Greece, Nepal, Japan and Egypt amongst other countries, Gea gets inspired for her work by the oriental impressions. The hand-colored etchings are like dreams, in which differences in time and place disappear, while that seems perfectly logical. Gea Karhof combines her own childhood memories and travel experiences with general history, so that Gea’s etchings at first sight appear to be historical documents. Each time, all elements come together under a larger theme that forms the basis for her work. ‘’Subjects present themselves; I am never consciously looking for the’’ says Karhof. ''Musis Sacrum'' is a great examples of Gea's fascination of the language of music. Music is an abstract expression of art; only our hearing is directly involved. Must also has its own unique system of notation. The music score of ancient and modern-day cultures is the subject of a lot of her prints. Exploring with the will to fathom takes time. For example, the complex etching ''Musis Sacrum'' required months of preparation. This etching bears the name of, and its main form is the contours of the Arnhem theater (the Netherlands) where many concerts, including world music, are programmed. The print is populated by a celestial orchestra in which Karhof's childhood heroes Superman and Batman play along, nine Greek muses and a nine-piece world orchestra that makes music at the foot of the building. In this orchestra, a serious, harp-playing angel from the Italian Renaissance makes music with Thai instrumentalists and a mischievous-looking Mickey...

  • Ali vs Armstrong

In a captivating new collection, Alex Guofeng Cao dazzles audiences with his unique twist on instantly recognizable images. Inspired by history and pop culture, Cao manipulates one iconic image to create another in his extraordinary large-scale works. From a distance, the pieces appear to be a singular image but as the viewer approaches closer, you find each work is a masterfully crafted compilation of minute detailed images layered next to one another, creating a mesmerizing and hypnotic optical illusion. Cao meticulously places each smaller image to form a dynamic gradient from dark to light which tricks the eye into seeing one image. This expertise in contrast is exemplified in all of his works, from striking black and white pieces to stunning explorations in high-definition color. He cleverly mirrors this visual contrast in his subject matter by subverting the main image and creating a dialogue between the macrocosm and microcosm. Take the piece, Ali vs Armstrong; here we see the iconic image of Muhammed Ali’s victory composed of thousands of tiny portraits of Neil Armstrong.
