Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso, "Peintre ramassant son Pinceau" from Le Chef- d’Œuvre Inconnu

1927

About the Item

An original etching from "Le Chef- d’Œuvre Inconnu" by Pablo Picasso, created in 1927 and published in 1931. It is hand signed and numbered 7/99 in red brush from the edition of 99. This piece is unframed and the sheet measures 15 1/8 x 19 3/4 inches. The image measures 8 x 11 inches. This collection by Pablo Picasso is based on a captivating short story by Honoré de Balzac, Le Chef-d'oeuvre Inconnu, which translates to The Hidden Masterpiece. In this tale, an aging painter obsessively works on a painting that he has kept secret for many years. To his dismay, the painting is later criticized when two friends discover his work. Distraught over this harsh criticism, the painter destroys the masterpiece and takes his own life. In 1927, Picasso was commissioned by art dealer Ambroise Vollard to do a series of illustrations for Balzac's novel. This story spoke to Picasso on such a deep level that he accepted the offer and created thirteen etchings illustrating the tale. Picasso's etchings were completed in 1931 for the centennial edition of "Le Chef-d'oeuvre inconnu". All etchings from the series are hand signed and numbered from the edition of 99 in brush.
