About the Item
'The Turquoise Suite' is a portfolio of three original color lithograph by the renown printmaker R.C. Gorman. From Arizona, the artist's later works focus almost entirely on the female figure and take Native American and Southwestern imagery as a source of inspiration. In each print, a single woman sits in a colorful yet undefined space that suggests the sandy desert and blue skies of the American Southwest. Each of the prints bears the name of a different turquoise mine, including 'Morenci', 'Blue Gem' and 'Cerillos', and each of the three women wears a beautifully rendered piece of turquoise jewelry. This portfolio likewise includes the original portfolio cover, which is constructed of turquoise-blue silk-lined paper and repeats the image of 'Cerillos' tipped to its exterior.

R.C. Gorman is a Navajo artist born in Arizona in 1931. Of his upbringing he says: "I was born near Canyon de Chelly in Arizona and spent my early years living close to nature and Navajo tradition. My family was rich in artistic talent and creative spirit, but not in material possessions. I have been fortunate to live and work in the beautiful Taos Valley, an environment also rich in artistry and tradition." He received education from Arizona State College and Mexico City College.
Gorman draws inspiration from Native American and Southwestern imagery for his work. "Gladia" features this influence and creates a quiet scene of reflection between woman and nature.

- 'The Dealer' original signed color lithograph from the Gambler SeriesLocated in Milwaukee, WI'The Dealer' is an original lithograph from John Doyle's 'Gambler' series. The suite included ten different prints, each image capturing the exhilaration and danger of the games of chance played by casino goers. In one of the prints, a woman pulls the lever of a slot machine; in another, men queue before a lottery ticket window. In 'The Dealer,' a man faces the viewer directly. His stern gaze is hidden behind dark glasses as he springs cards between his hands in a flurry of aces and spades.
