About the Item
The Parable of the Fruit Tree. 1927. Line engraving. Dodgson 60.v/vi. 5 7/8 x 3 7/8 (sheet 15 1/16 x 11 1/8). One of 15 proofs before the engraved title. Series: The Brook Kerith by George Moore. Proof before publication in the 1929 Macmillan edition of 500. Printed on cream wove paper on the full sheet with deckle edges. Signed and dated in pencil. Housed in a 20 x 16-inch archival mat, suitable for framing.
Stephen Frederick Gooden was born in Rugby and attended Rugby Schoo; subsequently studying at the Slade School of Fine Art 1903-13. After serving in WWI worked with lithography, wood engraving and etching but by the 1920s was concentrating on copper engraving and worked with the Nonesuch Press. Exhibited with the Royal Society of Painters Engravers, Royal Society of Minature Painters...', Royal Academy and the New English Art Club. Elected RA 1946. Illustrated many books including: 'Anacreon' translated by Abraham Cowley, 1923; O Henry's 'The Gift of the Magi', 1939. Lived at Chesham Bois, Buckinghamshire. His work is held by the Whitworth Gallery, Manchester, as well as the British Museum.
