At first glance, Time Bokan (Black) looks like a friendly skull floating against a deep black background, as if it had jumped straight out of a classic Japanese anime. But if you linger a moment, you’ll soon realize this piece is much more than a colorful image. It’s inspired by the 1970s anime Time Bokan, a show filled with villains who, when defeated, exploded leaving behind an iconic skull-shaped cloud. Murakami takes this cartoonish gesture and transforms it into a symbol heavy with meaning: a visual echo that inevitably recalls the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, reminding us of the historical and emotional weight carried by these images.
Yet the skull here isn’t frightening or sinister. Murakami, with his unmistakable touch, gives it eyes formed by his famous smiling flowers—a nod to his “superflat” style that blends Japanese pop culture with sharp, playful critique. The silver cold foil stamp on paper adds a subtle, almost hypnotic shine, contrasting with the deep black background and lending an unexpected elegance.
Beyond its fun and shiny appearance, Time Bokan (Black) is a profound reflection on how Japanese culture processes and represents collective trauma, using the visual language of animation and pop art to soften, question, and remember.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Takashi Murakami (Tokyo, 1962) is a contemporary artist whom, through painting and digital or commercial mediums, has developed a language that blends popular culture with formal elements of Japanese traditional art.
He applied for the National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo where he received his doctorate in Nihonga, a discipline that blends the traditional study of east and west.
In 1990 Murakami begins his career as a contemporary artist and in 1993 he created Mr. DOB, a self-portrait. Develops a new artistic style he calls "Superflat" which is characterized by the bi-dimensionality and the fusion of traditional Japanese art, anime, manga and Pop Art. Soon he begins to be called as the Japanese Andy Warhol.
In 1998 he opened a study of the Hiropon Factory in Brooklyn and begins to participate in exhibitions in America.
In 2000 he organizes an exhibition entitled "Superflat" at the Parco Gallery in Tokyo that will also visit the MOCA in Los Angeles. In this exhibition presents the anime culture as part of the artistic and cultural heritage of Japan.
Murakami founded Kaikai Kiki Co. Ltd in 2001 and opens branch offices in both Tokyo and New York.
In 2002 takes place the exhibition "Takashi Murakami: Kaikai Kiki" at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and at the Serpentine Gallery in London. The following year he installed at Rockefeller Center in New York his biggest public sculpture, "Reversed Double Helix" and begins to develop works for Louis Vuitton.
Between 2008 and 2009 it's being organized a retrospective entitled "Murakami" at the MOCA in Los Angeles, the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Museum fur Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Takashi Murakami
Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami may be famous among collectors for the psychedelic flowers and chaotic cartoons that populate his prints and paintings, but artists likely know him as the theorist behind the contemporary art movement he calls “Superflat.”
Partially inspired by the Pop art of Andy Warhol, in which celebrity culture and mundane mass-produced items became the focus of bright and colorful works that both celebrated and criticized consumerism, Murakami’s Superflat encompasses painting, sculpture, digital design and more to present a subversive look at consumerism but is also an effort to blend fine art and lowbrow culture.
A multifaceted and remarkably influential artist as well as a compulsive art collector, Murakami has collaborated with brands such as Louis Vuitton, while one of his most famous Superflat works is the teddy bear on the cover of the Graduation album by American rapper Kanye West.
In 1993 Murakami earned his Ph.D. from Tokyo University of the Arts, where he was trained in nihonga, a style of painting that originated in the late 19th century by artists who worked to preserve and promote the conventions and processes associated with traditional Japanese art. While practicing nihonga, Murakami began to realize that his beliefs didn’t align with the tradition, so his art subsequently took on a satirical feel that embodied a critique of the movement. Before long, his style took a drastic turn, embracing otaku, a rising postwar cultural phenomenon among Japan’s younger crowd who loved anime and manga. (Otaku is also integral to Superflat.)
This is when Murakami’s most well-known character, Mr. DOB, was born. This anime-inspired icon, which Americans might interpret as a cross between Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Lewis Carroll’s Cheshire Cat given its pronounced ears and broad and menacing grin, was part of the artist’s endeavor to elevate the otaku subculture but also to target mass consumerism. While Murakami conceived of Mr. DOB years ahead of his 2000-era Superflat theory, there is much common ground between the two. Not unlike his other creations, Murakami’s Mr. DOB is equal parts erotic, disturbing and cartoonish — an incisive mockery of the mingling of commerce and fine art so prevalent in Japanese popular culture.

Biography:
American artist Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City on October 27, 1923, and grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side. In the 1960s, Lichtenstein became a leading figure of the new Pop Art movement. Inspired by advertisements and comic strips, Lichtenstein's bright, graphic works parodied American popular culture and the art world itself. He died in New York City on September 29, 1997.
Lichtenstein was committed to his art until the end of his life, often spending at least 10 hours a day in his studio. His work was acquired by major museum collections around the world, and he received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the National Medal of Arts in 1995. In 2013 the painting "Woman with Flowered Hat" set another record at $56.1 million as it was purchased by British jeweler Laurence Graff...
