Lock the Barn when the Oxen have Fled - Original Etching - Early 19th Century

Early 19th Century

About the Item

Lock the Barn when the Oxen have fled is an original modern artwork realized in the first decades of the 19th Century. Original colored Etching on paper. A long inscription is present on the lower margin. On the upper side the number XXXI is present. Excellent conditions. Beautiful old paper engraving depicting a genre scene. The scene, set in a countryside, depicts a man that is going to close the barn door. A second figure is behind him, both the male figures are wearing nice dark headdresses. Meanwhile, on the right side, we see oxen fleeing. At the bottom we read the following Italian inscription "Serrar la stalla quando sono scappati i Bovi" (Trad. "Lock the Barn when the oxen have fled"). The scene, that has a satirical character, wants to show us that when the wrong things has happened it is useless to make repair. The work is part of a series of satirical engravings concerning the uses and customs of the century.
