About the Item

Solidly grounded in Abstract Expressionist tradition, process-oriented painter Thomas Nozkowski’s method is predicated on relinquishing the idea of an end result. To highlight this, in 2010 the Pace Gallery exhibited his oil paintings in tandem with oil on paper companions, thematically similar iterations depicting another direction each painting could have taken. Drawing inspiration from patterns and shapes in the environments around him, Nozkowski’s work is characterized by vivid color, an accumulation of geometrical and organic shapes, and experimentation with the figure-ground relationship.
