About

22 color lithograph/screenprint on Rives BFK paper, signed on lower margin in pencil by the artist

Gemini G.E.L. was founded in 1966 by Sidney Felsen and Stanley Grinstein. In the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, when artists came to work at Gemini, they often stayed at the Grinstein’s home in Los Angeles. The house became a center for local, national, and international artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Richard Serra, and others to come meet, have long conversations, drink, eat, and generally have a good time. When Stanley Grinstein died in 2014, at his memorial Ed Ruscha said that the Grinstein home was a place of “unstructured merriment.” For Gemini’s 50th Anniversary this year, Ed made this print, which features an image of the Grinstein home, a photo that Ed took himself.

Specifically, Ed said about the Grinstein home, “It was a series of legendary parties that the Grinstein’s had, and they were rather unforgettable. They were more like a menagerie, sort of like unstructured merriment. Sometimes it got out of hand, but it didn’t seem to matter… I mean, we were the zoo and they were the zookeepers.”
