Artist Biography: She was born in Latvia in 1921. She received her early training in Munich, Germany, working in theater Costume History and Design, and in painting before she came to America. In 1949 she became an American citizen. Once in New York she studied at the Art Students League, the School of Visual Arts, the Pratt Graphic Art Center under Frasconi, and then continued at Pratt on a fellowship to work under Michael Ponce de Leon...

At the age of five he moved to Otaru in Hokkaido, where he would come to serve as an apprentice to a sign painter. Saito became infatuated with art after studying drawing with Gyokusen Narita and moved to Tokyo in 1932 to study Western-style painting at the Hongo Painting Institute.
