John Stobart
The Statue of Liberty in a Panorama of New York City in 1886

About the Item

John Stobart "The Statue of Liberty in a Panorama of New York City in 1886" Color Lithograph approx 32 x 43 inches framed Signed in Pencil and Numbered 914/950 A marine painter of harbor scenes and ship portraits, John Stobart has devoted his career to showing the majestic beauty of sailing ships from a previous era. He also does some plein-air painting. He was born in 1929 in Leicester, England and studied at the Derby College of art and at the Royal Academy School in London in the 1950s and then traveled by passenger-cargo vessel to his father's home in south Africa. This voyage sparked his interest in maritime subjects, something he pursued for more than fifty years. In 1959, he moved to Canada where he earned a living by creating oil paintings of ships for shipping firms along the St. Lawrence River. Then in the mid 1960s, he shifted the focus of his career to historical paintings of sailing scenes. In 1965, Kennedy Galleries of Boston held his first solo exhibition, which brought him to the attention of New England collectors. In 1988, his Stobart Foundation, funded from the profits of his publishing business for his prints, created fellowships to help art students ease the transition from student to professional fine artist. It also awards scholarships to students who excel in plein-air painting. Of his entry, "Key Largo: 'Yankee' Entering the Harbor," in the 2000 Artists of America Exhibit in Denver, Colorado, he said: "It's a fabulous schooner. It looks absolutely magnificent under sail. Any sailboat does-it's a thing of great beauty" ("Southwest Art," 9/2000).

His teacher was the leading German impressionist Max Liebermann (1847-1935), who was the champion of French impressionism in Berlin. He had traveled to Barbizon and Paris to see paintings by Manet first hand, including In the Conservatory, which made its way to Berlin. Later Vorst's home town of Essen would acquire a collection of modern art in 1921, which became the Museum Folkwang, one of the earliest of its kind. Most likely to escape the Nazis, Vorst made his way to Missouri; we know that he was a member of the American Artists Congress and he signed the famous "Call" in 1936 at the group's first congress, the left-wing organization that stood up to combat fascism. Surely he would have known Joe Jones...

Andrew Wyeth "Dogwood" 1983 Collotype Ed. 115/300 Signed and Numbered Lower Right Image Size: 21 x 28 3/4 inches Framed Size: approx. 29 x 36.5 inches A painter of landscape and figure subjects in Pennsylvania and Maine, Andrew Wyeth became one of the best-known American painters of the 20th century. His style is both realistic and abstract, and he works primarily in tempera and watercolor, often using the drybrush technique. He is the son of Newell Convers and Carolyn Bockius Wyeth of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and was home-schooled because of delicate health. His art instruction came from his famous-illustrator father, who preached the tying of painting to life--to mood and to essences and to capturing the subtleties of changing light and shadows. The Wyeth household was a lively place with much intellectual and social stimulation. Because of the prominence of N.C. Wyeth, persons including many dignitaries came from all over the country to visit the family. Andrew's sisters Carolyn and Henriette became noted artists as did his brother-in-law, Peter Hurd. The non-art oriented brother, Nathaniel Wyeth...
