Sidney Mackenzie Litten
Italian Boat at Sunrise

1920

About the Item

A nostalgic image of a bucolic farmyard and thatched cottage, hearkening to a bygone era. Etching with drypoint on laid watercolor paper, 9 7/8 x 11 3/4 inches, (251 x 229 mm), full margins. Signed in black crayon in the lower right margin, and titled and numbered 19/75 in pencil in the lower left margin. In excellent condition with minor toning on the verso at the extreme top sheet edge (does not show through to recto), otherwise superb. With an unknown collector's stamp with a stylized K and G in a square in black ink in the lower right margin on the verso (not in Lugt). An impression of the work may be found in the permanent collection of the Museum of New Zealand, Registration No. 1964-0001-24. Little is known about Sydney Litten. He studied at the Royal College of Art with Frank Short, and specialized in landscapes and architectural subjects. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (RA) and the New English Art Club (NEAC). He did the majority of his work in Spain and Italy. 51 of his prints are recorded in the annual Fine Prints of the Year starting in 1926 and ending in 1935. Like Whistler and McBey he did his etchings in series such as his Thames images and two Venice Sets of four prints each, done in 1928. Venice was the subject for fifteen etchings, exhibited until 1935, at which time Litten appears to have quit etching.
