Baskin, Leonard. MANTEGNA AT EREMTIANI. F/O'S 181. Woodcut, 1952. Artist's Proof (edition size, if any, not known). Inscribed "Artist's Proof" and signed in pencil. 19 x 28 inches. In excellent condition; framed. This striking and powerful image is one of the strongest of Baskin's series of large format or "monumental" woodcuts. Andrea Mantegna is noted for the series of frescoes he did in the Eremtiani church in Padua.
Baskin was a great scholar, and one of his interests was art and artists of the past. He did several series of portraits of artists, as well as many individual portraits of artists he admired, of which this is one.
