ONE THOUSAND AND ONE INITIAL LETTERS

One Thousand and One Initial Letters playfully describes an artistic endeavor by Owen Jones. Teaching Applied Arts at the South Kensington School of Design, Jones honed his skills at transforming historical design into contemporary brilliance. Never imitating or duplicating, he remained true to the times and the materials available. Like his fellow artists, architects, painters and poets, he was on the cusp of change. In Jones’ lifetime a new aesthetic would develop. By the centuries’ end it would become an era with a heighten sense of nature coupled with design. The phrase ‘Art Nouveau’ would describe more that just art; it would become a style pervasive in everyday life from clothes to furnishings.
Jones found much inspiration in both Asian and Hispanic design. While still in his 20’s he traveled through both Spain and the Orient and found great stylistic influence their art, architecture and music. A Pre-Raphaelite, Jones was made Superintendent of Works for the Great Exhibition of 1851. He produced a unique style of decoration for the Crystal Palace. Not bad for a fellow in his 40’s.
By the mid-1800’s, gentlemen such as William Morris were practicing what they believed and the world of design was again thrown into flux. The result was known, as the Arts and Crafts Movement. Jones was right there to welcome it. In keeping with his academic background, Jones created an encyclopedic reference book containing his interpretation of the alphabet. Each letter would be drawn in many variations of both upper and lower case, and highlighted with gold. Whether designing the family crest, personalizing luggage or letterhead, One Thousand and One Initial Letters would provide the ‘right’ look for the discerning individual.

After both moving to London and losing his father, Crane obtained an apprenticeship as William Linton’s engraving shop. This position exposed the young Crane to political reform which would become a major influence on his future work. As in illustrator, Crane became part of an influential group of political and religious radical movements. A supporter of the Liberal Party, Crane was outspoken in his support of the Communard’s attempt to overthrow the French government in 1871. It is seemingly ironic that at this time that Crane’s reputation as an illustrator of children’s books began to blossom. Within a decade Crane would join his life-long friend William Morris’s Arts and Crafts...Category
