Paul Colin
Circa 1950 poster for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique by Paul Colin

Circa 1950

About the Item

The Compagnie Générale Transatlantique commissioned Paul Colin in 1937 to create this poster representing the famous liner "Normandie" in response to the airlines on transcontinental travel. After the war, in 1948-1949, the printer Courbet S.A. in Paris reissued the poster. The image of the ship emphasizes the stability, safety, comfort, style and luxury of an ocean liner, as evidenced by the massive proportions of the ship. Note the clever use of the French national colors in the vertical "waves": the liner with its huge impressive bow dominates this striking image. Paul Colin 🇫🇷 (1892-1985) is considered one of the greatest French poster artists. Very Art Deco at the beginning, his style soon became very personal and impossible to classify: the synthetic precision of his portraits, the evocative power of his posters for great causes characterize him so much as a master of visual communication that his work remains current and relevant. Fresh. Considered a master of the modern poster school, he has created more than 1400 posters and numerous theater sets and costumes.
