Aegidius Sadeler
Portrait of Marquard Freher, aged forty-nine

1618

About the Item

Engraving on hand made laid paper, 8 1/2 x 5 7/8 inches (210 x 148 mm), thread margins. An approximately 1-inch vertical repaired tear extends into the image area at the top center sheet edge. Adhered to archival paper at the center of the top sheet edge, and at the top and bottom left corners, with an associated dog-eared lower left corner. Condition issues are consistent with age. A superb impression with rich, dark inking and all of the fine lines printing clearly. An impression of this work may be viewed in the permanent collection of the British Museum, registration no. O,2.54. [Hollstein 291] __________ In the upper left corner of the portriat is a fancy heraldic coat of arms with two feathered talons and a Burgonet helmet, on the right is an ovoid tableau with the sun and moon shining above a group of soldiers, bearing the enigmatic latin phrase "Non mihi verum alies" (I do not know the truth of others). The inscription in Latin above and below the portrait reads: "V. Illvst. Marqvardvs Frehervs, patr. Avg. Vind. IC. Sereniss. Viiviro Com. Palat. a Cons. et Dicasteri Elector. Proivdex." and "[died] III.Eid.Mai. Ann. CIC.IC.CXIV. ætat.XLIX.". The work is inscribed and signed in Latin in lower margin, first four lines by German jurist Georg Remus, followed by three lines of dedication to Paul Freher: "Dona Hominvm ... / ... velvt ætherivs Sol. / Georg Remus IC. facieb." and "V. Nob. et Clariss. Dn. Pavlo Frehero ... / ... Sac. Cæs. Maiest. / glyptes Ægidius Sadeler Pragæ Ao. MDCXVIII.".

Deuchar, David (after van Ostade). Les paysans tuant un porc. Edinburgh: c1800. Etching on thin cream laid paper, 4 11/16 x 4 11/16 inches (117 x 117 mm), narrow margins. Horizontal edge tear extending approximately 1-inch into the image area at the center left sheet edge. Skinning at the bottom-center sheet edge, verso, and adhesive residue at the top two corners, verso. Etched by David Deuchar after van Ostade, from A Collection of Etchings After the Most Eminent Masters of the Dutch and Flemish Schools particularly Rembrandt, Ostade, Cornelius Bega and Van Vliet, Edinburgh: 22 December, 1803. "The pig killers is one of van Ostade’s most striking, both for its circular format and unusual lighting. Pictorial representations of pig slaughtering were known in medieval book illumination where they were incorporated into depictions of activities relating to the month of November or December. In this intimate, nocturnal scene, illuminated by torchlight, van Ostade combines coarse, barnyard realism with tender observation as a peasant family gathers round to witness the slaughter of a pig, which presumably will feed the large family during the long winter months. As the eldest son kneels on the animal, the farmer’s wife collects the blood in her long handled pan...
