About the Item

'You're Right And You Know It (And So Should Everyone Else)' by Barbara Kruger features colors of green, pink, black, and white. Rising to prominence in the 1980s, Barbara Kruger became an influential voice in conceptual art, known for her bold fusion of image and text in striking tones of red, black, and white. Her powerful works challenge viewers to confront issues of media influence, consumerism, power, and gender politics through a sharp, feminist lens. Drawing from her early career as a graphic designer at Condé Nast and her studies under artists like Diane Arbus at Parsons School of Design, Kruger developed a visual language that merges the aesthetics of advertising with biting social commentary. Her large-scale collages feature found black-and-white photographs overlaid with declarative text in fonts such as Futura Bold Oblique — language that feels both familiar and confrontational. By adopting the persuasive tone of marketing and mass media, Kruger subverts the very systems she critiques. Iconic works such as I Shop Therefore I Am and You Are a Captive Audience reveal her incisive critique of consumer culture, while Untitled (Your Body Is a Battleground) (1989) remains a defining feminist statement, originally created to support a women’s march on Washington. Through her direct use of “you” and “I,” Kruger implicates the viewer, transforming passive observation into active self-reflection. Kruger’s art remains profoundly relevant in today’s image-saturated world — visually arresting, politically charged, and unmistakably her own. Her work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
