About the Item
This black and white photographic print is printed on Coroplast, a particular type of corrugated plastic. The piece is illustrative of Chicano art, its uses of industrial media and popular culture. The photo is most likely a self-portrait of the artist; it is unframed.
Cruz Ortiz is a leading figure in the contemporary Chicano art centered in San Antonio, Texas. He works as a painter, popular culture creator, and printmaker, erasing the boundaries among genres and media, and presenting in an alter ego, SPAZTEK, trenchant political commentaries. A regular South Texas fixture, he has been invited to participate in international exhibitions in Europe and the Caribbean. He graduated from the University of Texas, San Antonio.
