Louis-Theophile Hingre
Original "Breger & Javal" 1899 gold embossed calendar and poster

1899

About the Item

Rare original Breger & Javal "Impressions su Metal" turn of the century (1899) original poster. Artist: Louis-Theophile Hingre. Art nouveau style, very similar to Alphonse Mucha's works. Archival linen-backed and ready to frame. This poster was created for the change to a new century from 1899 to 1900. Archival acid-free linen backed and ready to frame. Beautiful gold work done in two different tones. Gold in the hair and the zodiacs is brighter gold, and the gold behind her face is old gold. Condition: Linen-backed. Minor repairs along the cream border and the marron in a few places. Touch-up of gold in the lowest border on the bottom Touch-ups on the left side in maroon. Remember that this poster is over 123 years old. Every day of the year has a saint listed at the bottom of this image; you can read every one of them. You do have to have good eyesight because the printing is very tiny! The artist's name is on the lower right side and is shown in one of the images; it is faint. In the same area is ghost-printed Mil Neuf Cent. (1900). Clearly an admirer of Mucha, Hingre worked in metal and stone sculpture in addition to being a graphic artist. [PAI-XIII, 255] His posters rarely come up, even for auction. His known sculptures pay homage to many different animals, including mice, birds, and even bulls. This poster shows a 12-month calendar beneath the woman's bust. Note the zodiac symbols in the archway framing her and the rope latticework that wraps the design's upper portion. Two very 3- dimensional butterflies are visiting a flower on her shoulder. The calendar section at the bottom has legible names of every Saint for every day of the year. This is an Original Lithograph Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. A great addition to any Alphonse Mucha collector collection.

  • Antique Rooster Woodblock Print circa 1910 by Prosper Alphonse Isaac
    Located in SANTA FE, NM
Antique Rooster Portrait Prosper Alphonse Isaac (France, 1858-1924) Woodblock Print circa 1910 9 x 7 1/8 (15 1/4 x 17 frame) inches The excellent book "The Great Wave: The Influence of Japanese Woodcuts on French Prints" which was an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1974, recounts the phenomenal "cult of Japan" in late nineteenth-century France and reveals through direct comparisons its particular impact on the graphic work of Manet, Degas, Cassatt, Bonnard, Vuillard, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Gauguin. This print directly relates to the discovery of Japanese art most notably through the woodblock prints which found their way to the West oftentimes as stuffing or packing materials from consumer goods that were being imported to the West at the end of the 19th century. Prosper-Alphonse Isaac was born in a well-to-do family. This gave him the means not only of leaving his native Calais to pursue a career as an artist in Paris, but also the means to acquire art. Isaac was particularly drawn to Japanese arts, which he collected avidly. Many of the objects he bought were eventually given to museums. As a printmaker Isaac started drawing seascapes in dry point, but eventually moved on to become one of only a handful of artists versed in color woodcut techniques in France. His compositions, generally small in scale, are heavily influenced by the arts of Japan. He printed small editions of these works. Aside from this artistic activity, Isaac was also an active textile decorator. "This mark, which he borrows from Hokusaï and Totoya Hokkeï...
