Alexandra of Denmark, Queen of England (1844-1925). Alexandra Caroline Marie Charlotte Louise Julia was born in Copenhagen on December 1st. 1844 in the Yellow Palace, home of her parents, Prince Christian of Schleswig Holstein Sonderburg Gulcksburg, future King Christian IX of Denmark, and Princess Louise of Hesse Cassel. Alix, as the Danish Princess was familiarly called, was a famous beauty. She married Queen Victoria's eldest son, Edward, the Prince of Wales, becoming herself Princess of Wales. The Prince and Princess of Wales were very popular in England. The Prince succeeded his mother in 1901 as King Edward VII, and Alexandra became Queen of England. As such, she was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Empress of India, from 1901 to 1910.

Most fine jewelry in the 1900's was white and made from either diamonds or pearls. Queen Alexandra initially wore dog collar chokers, called a 'collier de chien' to cover a small scar on her neck. Her high necklines started a fashion craze, though few at the time knew the reason behind them.
