NATURAL BEAUTY Signed Lithograph Abstract Color Portrait Black Woman Flower Vase

1990

About the Item

NATURAL BEAUTY by the self taught African American artist William Tolliver (b.1951-2000) is an original hand drawn limited edition lithograph printed in 25 colors on archival printmaking paper 100% acid free, using hand lithography techniques, hand signed and titled in pencil by William Tolliver. William Tolliver 's recognizable artistic style freely combines the colors of Chagall with the solid compositional principles of Cezanne and the mood and forms reminiscent of Modigliani and Picasso. In NATURAL BEAUTY, Tolliver creates a representational abstract portrait of a pensive, long wavy haired woman wearing a head wrap, holding a single white flower and vase. NATURAL BEAUTY pleases the eye with its rainbow color palette in vivid shades of deep blue, purple, magenta, cool greens, aqua, light yellow, and black with white accents. The intricate black textured master drawing defines and outlines the background frame and woman's face with geometric and organic shapes. Artist statement: "I love my work and I have worked very hard to portray African-Americans with pride and dignity. My goal is to bring to the forefront the seriousness of art as a part of a person's heritage. I want my art to serve as a history lesson." William Tolliver Print size - 39.5 x 26.5, very impressive, large vertical format, unframed, excellent condition, pencil signed by William Tolliver, Print documentation/ Certificate of Authenticity provided Edition size - 350 Year published - 1990 Natural Beauty is one of William Tolliver's very first hand drawn limited edition lithographs and was printed at JK Fine Art Editions Co. NYC by master printers Joseph Kleineman and Maureen Turci. William Tolliver, born in 1951 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, was the second oldest of fourteen children. Though he lacked a formal education and grew up impoverished, he went on to teach himself art through books he found in the library and those brought to him by his mother. His mother, who loved to draw, encouraged his painting after she noticed his talent. Using inexpensive oil pastels and watercolor sets, painter William Tolliver recreated his everyday environment growing up in Mississippi. Tolliver was a versatile artist who handled figure studies, portraits, human interest situations, landscapes, and semi-abstracts equally well. His mastery of color, harmony, and design is unmatched in the art world. He used every painterly medium and a diversity of styles, all of which are polished and bear the distinctive stamp of his personality. His works are reminiscent rather than message oriented, often reflecting experiences from his Mississippi childhood. Recurrent themes in Tolliver's art are people working and living -- stevedores, farmers, cotton pickers, women embracing their children, and people playing musical instruments. Tolliver’s works evoke compassion with an underlying sense of expressive emotion. “I could draw on a lot of sad and depressing things from my life, but I’d rather emphasize the positive.”
