Raymond Pettibon Punk Art 1981:
Raymond Pettibon illustrated gig flyer / handbill for: The Subhumans, China White, Mad Society, Runns, Assassins at Polish Hall, Los Angeles 1981. Post marked 1981 on the verso; quite rare as such.
Offset Print; 8.5 x 11 inches.
Pettibon printed signature appears on the lower right.
A RARE original example, mailed by SST Records in 1981.
Condition: Staple on mid-left; fold-lines consistent with mailing; scattered signs of handling, fading and minor wear consistent with age and medium; otherwise good overall condition.
Further History:
Between the years 1978 and 1986 Raymond Pettibon (aka, Raymond Pettibone; St. Pettibone) produced a now historic amassment of graphic works for seminal Southern California punk bands such as Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys and The Subhumans. Published mostly by SST Records - founded by Pettibon's brother and Black Flag guitarist, Greg Ginn, these works shed valuable light on the origin and development of Pettibon’s thematic interests & style; not to mention his evolution into one of the most important artist’s of his generation.
Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist once said of Pettibon's early punk illustrations: "Before I knew what Black Flag was I remember walking around Hollywood and seeing Raymond's flyers and being like, 'What the fuck is that?'… Those flyers made me feel like something is going on and it's romantic and it's mysterious and it's heavy and I don't know what it is but I wanna know."
In February 2017, the New Museum New York presented 'A Pen of All Work,' a major solo exhibition of Pettibon’s work featuring 700 plus drawings from the 1960s to the present.
