Shepard Fairey - Obey Giant - Endless Power Petrol Place - Urban Street Art

2019

About the Item

"The 'Endless Power Petrol Palace' poster is both a celebration and critique of the seductive graphic propaganda used for the petroleum industry. I designed this print to feel like a vintage ad celebrating the abundance of America and the bright future of the American Dream. Though oil is finite, our reliance on it is so extreme that the power wielded by those who control oil is virtually unlimited. Though oil may have seemed initially to be endless, we now know the world’s oil reserves will run out eventually but more importantly, we know from thorough scientific research that the planet does not have the endless power to maintain a stable climate if oil and gas carbon emissions (as well as from other sources) do not decrease dramatically." -Shepard Fairey Shepard Fairey - Obey Giant - Endless Power Petrol Place - Blue Edition - Urban Graffiti Street Art Screen Print Year: 2019 Class: Limited Edition Art Print Edition#: 318/350 Released: 06/06/19 Run: 350 Technique: Screen Print Paper: Cream Speckletone Size: 24 X 18 Markings: Signed & Numbered Manufacturer: Obey Giant Acquired during the online release from the artist Expanding on the legacies of artists such as Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, Shepard Fairey’s practice disrupts the distinction between fine and commercial art. A major artist of the street art movement, Fairey rose to prominence in the early 1990s through the dispersion of posters, stickers, and murals, related to his Obey Giant campaign, which yielded an international cultural phenomenon. Fairey’s iconic poster of President Barack Obama was adopted as the official emblem associated with the presidential campaign and encapsulates a number of recurring concerns in the artist’s work, including propaganda, portraiture, and political power.
