About the Item

This black and white vanitas stilllife of a skull on a piece of paper is one of the artists early works. The perspective is very unusual - the spectator looks on the head of the skull from the birds eye view and can barely see its face. The skulls ganzing out of the picture. This work on paper appears in an edition of 50 copies. It is made with drypoint technique on copperplate. At this procedure the copperplate is manipulated with the drypoint needle. The slots in the plate can absorb the color and dispense it to the Paper. It is a form of the graphic intaglio. This artwork is signed and dated by Aigner in the upper left corner. Artist: Fritz Aigner was born in 1930 in Linz. In 1947 at age 17 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in the master class of Professor Sergius Pauser. In 1952 he received his diploma and the state prize of the Academy of Fine Arts. He worked as an artist in both public and private collections, with exhibitions both domestically and abroad. He spent long periods of time in Spain, Ireland, and London. Fritz Aigner died on January 9, 2005 at age 74 in Linz. For more than half a century Fritz Aigner was a singular figure in Upper Austrian cultural activities. Every assignment defied temporary art styles, and he was always determined to create his own artistic method. His own affinity for classical surrealism as well as for magical realism serve as examples of his artistic ability. The following characterization by Austrian writer Elfriede Czurda well describes his character as a painter: The pictures of Fritz Aigner are strongly influenced by a specific theme. This theme is not directly visible to the observer, but rather is hidden in an in-between area, which touches both the vital as well as the metaphysical spheres. His statements are simultaneously both conscious and unconscious. His pictures comprehend the entire complexity of human existence in their field of being. Aigner does not accomplish this theme artistically, but he stumbles across it, he is the medium, and the creation of these pictures isn't possible to illustrate in direct ways. How he can make pictures of what is not directly illustratable shows the highest degree of artistic perfection. As an artist Aigner is everything, invariably everything presentable ; here he rivals the old masters, and sometimes surpasses them. Light reflection in beads and glass, the hair as measure of an individually finer, translucent strand of hair like the swim to distant horizons in the atmosphere, these he can depict precisely in an unsurpassed manner. In the realm of three dimensional images Aigner is the perfect illusionist. In 1968 he participated in international exhibitions in Germany and England. The Gallery Lehner opened in 1973 with a solo exhibition from Fritz Aigner. In 1980 the german TV channel ZDF released a movie under the title "Fritz Aigner - Rembrandt in Linz". The first Monography about Aigner and his artworks was published in 1989 by Heinz Dieckmann. 2008 the solo exhibition in the municipal museum Nordico in Linz, with the title "Fritz Aigner - Wunderkind und Malmaschine" (Fritz Aigner - Prodigy and Painting-Machine), took place.
