About the Item

edition 21/35 Published by Durham Press In her sculpture, wall hangings, and prints, Apfelbaum explores complex formal and chromatic relationships, pushing the canon of modernist abstraction in decidedly original directions. Her work is steeped in references to feminism, women's work, craft, and fashion, and in particular the cultural associations inherent in pattern and design. Apfelbaum has employed floral motifs since 1990 in her sculptural pieces and installations. In these works on paper, she covers the sheet with a pattern of individual floral emblems printed from dozens of carved woodblocks, each printed in a single color. The result is undulating field of exuberant, celebratory color reminiscent of Matisse, but also indebted to the seriality of Andy Warhol's Pop screenprints. Apfelbaum's work can be found in the collections of many major institutions including MoMA, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Philadelphia Museum of Art.
