Chinese Lantern Flowers with Pears, Signed Lithograph, Sunlit Window Still Life

1973

About the Item

Chinese Lantern Flowers with Pears is a superbly executed hand drawn, stone lithograph printed using traditional hand printmaking techniques on archival paper 100% acid free. Chinese Lantern Flowers with Pears is a sunlit window still life featuring bold orange red Chinese lantern flower branches loosely arranged in a short, rounded vase with two yellow green pears leaning toward each other. The eye-catching color palette of pale yellow lime, orange red, peach and gold ochre create an atmosphere of sunlight. The freely drawn black outlines complete this appealing interior still life by the French artist "Messager". This hand made original lithograph displays the fluidity and versatility of hand lithography printmaking, a contemporary classic still life print. Paper size: 18.75 x 25.5 inches, very good condition, unframed, signed in pencil by the artist "Messager" hand printed in Paris France c. 1973. Image size: 14.75 x 21.5 inches Interesting notes about Chinese Lantern Flowers- Perennial Chinese Lantern flowers are not native to China. Rather, this unique plant originates from southeastern Europe and Japan. Chinese Lanterns get their name from the distinctive color and shape of the papery husk, which resembles a Chinese (or Japanese) Lantern. Chinese Lanterns are poisonous. Yet despite the poisonous nature of the leaves and unripe berries, this plant has have had a variety of medicinal applications. The medicinal applications include anti-inflammatory, expectorant, cough suppressant, fevers, treating malaria, bedwetting, and even promoting early labor! This novel plant grows up to two feet tall, producing white, 5-petaled flowers in mid-summer. The flowers give way to a light green, lantern-shaped husk with a berry inside. As it matures, the husk turns a bright orange-red color, and the husk turns papery. Chinese Lanterns make great dried flowers and are used in art projects.
