Ryan Van Der Hout
Chroma Tower No 1 - tall, geometric abstract, steel and glass sculpture

2022

About the Item

The striking metal towers of the Chroma series are stacked frames of glass that change colours and images as sunlight shines through them. Inspired by a background in photography, Ryan Van Der Hout has created a series of compelling minimalist sculptures that illustrate the effects of light and motion on lenses. While the Toronto born artist has been taking photographs since age 16, and created several sculptural images using digital photography, they only learned how to weld metal in 2020. An apprenticeship over several weeks in the studio of one of Canada’s foremost sculptors Shayne Dark followed. “Each sculpture becomes something of a static camera, documenting the many changes in the scene around it.” Ryan Van Der Hout An interdisciplinary artist Van Der Hout’s work focuses on ‘navigating stages of being such as grief, undoing and queer becoming.’ They have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Metropolitan University and have been supported by the Ontario Arts Council. Van Der Hout’s work has been widely published in The Huffington Post, Vogue Italia, Fortune Magazine, Larry’s List, CBC and Readers Digest and PhotoEd magazine. Their photo-based work was part of the AGO’s Collector’s series and has been exhibited in the U.K., New York and in Canada. They have created public art for the Toronto Archives, The TTC, Nuit Blanche in Toronto and Pemberton Developments. Van Der Hout is currently an MFA Fine Arts candidate at Parsons, the New School in New York City.

  • Chromatica - tall, geometric abstract, powder coated steel outdoor sculpture
    By Ryan Van Der Hout
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
As the sun moves through the sky, the green and purple lenses of Ryan Van Der Hout’s ‘Chromatica’ capture the light and cast colourful shadows. Van Der Hout’s powder-coated steel sculptures were inspired by their work as a professional photographer. This compelling modernist piece features five hand forged black steel poles that fan out from the center and are top and tailed with five disks of framed glass. Their vision was to create pieces infused with light and motion. As a result, the sculpture is best viewed by walking around it. “Effecting something of a kaleidoscopic eye, the sculpture’s lenses interact with sunlight and with each other to combine colours in surprising and delightful ways.” Ryan Van Der Hout An interdisciplinary artist Van...

  • "Blue Abstraction" Blown-glass, Steel, Abstract, Sculpture
    Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY "Blue Abstraction" is a blown-glass creation encased in steel. The captured organic lift of its shape belies the weight of its structure. The copper colored steel is a beautiful contrast to the deep cerulean blue of the glass and adds to the feel of sky and/or water seeming to give the piece a timeless flow. Albert Young has been operating an independent glass studio/school since 1983 and has been a pivotal member of the Detroit areas glass community. He received his BFA in ceramics from The Center For Creative in Studies in 1982 and his MFA in sculpture from Wayne State University in 1988 as well as studies in Taiwan, Murano, Italy and Canada. Albert currently owns and operates Michigan Hot Glass Workshop, Michigan’s oldest independent glass blowing school. He is also on the faculty at The College for Creative Studies where he teaches all levels of glass blowing and creative thinking. He is best known for his sculpture using innovative casting techniques and the combination of steel and glass. "Perspective in Orange" is a profound exploration of life's journey and the dynamic nature of perspective. Crafted from steel, then painted, this Constructivist style maquette (model) offers a visually striking representation of the transformative power of shifting viewpoints. The geometric lines that define the sculpture play a central role in conveying its message. As viewers encircle the work, they experience a fascinating interplay of disappearing and reappearing lines, shapes and forms. This clever use of perspective mirrors...
