“Rooted in my deep fascination with objects in a state of flux, the Shape Shifter ceramic works challenge our existing perception of the world by defying our need to categorise things and thus allowing objects to be seen in a new light.”
“The ambiguity of these works defies boundaries and categorisation. I achieve this through merging opposing forms; including geometric and organic, playing with scale, manipulation of context, and colour, to create works that are suggestive and act as prompts.”
Beatrice Galletley is a ceramic artist that lives and works in London. Since completing her studies in ceramics and glass, she creates multi-dimensional art objects that explore surface and perspective through clay. Recording her interaction with the material, the ceramicist uses a combination of hand-building techniques to make abstract ceramic sculptures that ‘defy physical and metaphorical boundaries’.

The wind crosses to the mountain and loops lazily in circles in the blue sky. “Metamorphosis” is part of a new series from Fitzgerald’s studios in Jingdezhen, China. This series uses over-glaze, a new ceramic firing technique that diverges from Fitzgerald’s previous ceramic practice, which used the traditional under-glaze technique with blue and white colors. Over-glaze allows FitzGerald to paint with a range of colors; unlike with other glaze techniques, such as under- or middle-glaze, over-glaze allows FitzGerald to paint onto an already fired ceramic panel, so there is no serious change in the color of the pigments. This is a special technique which allows the artist to mix Chinese painting techniques with western techniques derived from oil painting.
