About the Item

Brandon Reese's Hoop on Birch is a contemporary abstract copper and brown ceramic sculpture made with salt glazed stoneware on a birch wooden block. This piece measures 10 x 9 and is priced at $975. Brandon Reese’s focus on experimentation and varying techniques relates to his belief that the best part of life is the process, “My art wears the fingerprints, cuts, dents and other texturing as a roadmap and documentation of its creation.” He works primarily with stoneware and porcelain. Reese’s most recent pieces combine salt glazed stoneware and reclaimed native wood. His work is predominately known for its simple, familiar forms created in a variety of methods and at such large scales that the pieces push the traditional boundaries of ceramic art. A student show card was produced and distributed. Brick Acquisition - Acquired 60,000 lbs of new firebrick from an oil refinery. Personally loaded brick by brick onto pallets and transported them to the ceramic facility to construct a wood kiln. Safety - Updated studio to guidelines for safety compliance. (Signs, MSDS sheets, and chemical inventory) 2005 Ceramic Student Show - Ceramic Student Exhibition 2005 was the first student off-campus show I helped students organize in conjunction with the Multi-Arts Center. Omaha, Nebraska Field Trip - Organized trip and took students to visit the international, world renowned artist, Jun Kaneko. Toured his studio, kilns, and museum, all unmatched in scale and excellence. 2004 Leedy - Visiting Artist An internationally known ceramic sculptor facilitated a workshop and lecture that was open to the students and the public. Mr. Leedy traveled from Kansas City, MO. Jim Leedy - Exhibition I curated this work for the Gardiner Gallery. This show was significant due to its success in attracting numerous visitors to the gallery and lecture. Sedalia, Missouri Field Trip - Organized trip and took students to the Daum Museum located on the campus of State Fair Community College to an exhibition of Jun Kaneko’s, and toured the Daum Museum’s extensive permanent collection of ceramics. 2003 Kellogg Johnson - Visiting Artist Demonstrated construction and firing of large-scale raku vessels. He also jurored the student show during his visit. Mr. Johnson is the first artist of national reputation brought in on a visiting artist program I developed. Traveled from his home in Santa Fe, NM. Kiln Building - Constructed two large outdoor kilns (180 cubic foot downdraft salt kiln and 85 cubic foot cross draft soda/salt kiln). Kilns broadened the range and possibilities of personal research and student work. Advanced the reputation of the OSU art department by offering a more comprehensive ceramic studio and kilns. Provided the department with over $70,000 worth kilns for one seventh of costs by building the kilns with students. Kansas City, Missouri Field Trip - Organized trip and took students to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, the Kemper Contemporary Art Museum, the Kansas City Art Institute, the gallery district, and Jim Leedy’s studio in Kansas City, MO. 2002 New Studio - Set up equipment, shelving, tables, storage bins, materials etc… for the Visual Art Annex. Tulsa, Oklahoma Field Trip - Organized trip and took students to Tulsa University to view a national ceramic exhibition at the university gallery. An article featuring ceramic artist in Oklahoma, which led to a visit and eventual publication in June 2002. Ongoing Services Ceramic Area Head - Overseeing budget, courses, studio equipment and ordering of supplies. (since 2002) Kiln Firing - Spend extensive time firing kilns (Typical firing 12-48 hrs). Firing proficiency is crucial for safety. Require students to learn the different firing methods, equipping them with confidence and skills they need to produce better work. (since 2000) Advising - Advise graduating seniors and counsel them in their degree pursuit, BFA exhibition, and post graduate decisions. (since 2000) Supervision of student assistant - Supervise and direct student studio assistant (6-8 hours p/week) in studio maintenance. (since 2002) Coordination with studio tech - Provide up to date job punch lists for studio repairs and materials needed. (since 2005) Holiday Ceramic Sale - Organize annual sale of student ceramic work in the Student Union. The proceeds from the sale are split 50/50 between the students and a fund set up for the visiting artist and art field trips. (since 2001) Covenant Community School - Teach beginning ceramics on a volunteer basis to kindergarten through sixth grade students at a private elementary school. The art they make during class is sold at an art show fundraiser for the school. (since 2003)
