About the Item

Andra Samelson’s work explores the relationship of microcosm and macrocosm, the celestial and terrestrial. Her imagery is often associated with molecular and galactic systems. Combining elements from drawing, painting, sculpture and installation, she takes objects from our everyday world that include pins, paper dots, ping pong balls and marbles to create work that emphasizes our connection to the cosmos. In her recent paintings on paper, panel and canvas, she uses various tools to create a layered linear matrix from which biomorphic and geometric forms emerge. She is interested in asymmetries and irregularities that produce what is surprising and idiosyncratic. Andra Samelson is a multi-media artist and her prints, drawings, paintings, sculpture and installations have been exhibited extensively in galleries and museums throughout the United States and Europe. Samelson is a recipient of fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Corporation of Yaddo, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Stone Quarry Hill Art Park in Cazenovia, NY and a visiting artist at the University of Virginia and the ceramics factory, Grazia Majoliche Artistiche, in Deruta, Italy. Her work has been reproduced and reviewed in the New York Times, Art Forum, New York Arts, New American Painting and elsewhere. Samelson's art work is represented in several private and public collections including the Rubin Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, Chase Manhattan Bank, Dow Jones, and the Loyola University Museum of Art.
