Delphine Grandvaux
"Expansion", Hand-Made Metallic Airy Figurative Abtract Grey Red Mesh Sculpture

2022

About the Item

"Expansion" is a metallic airy sculpture entirely hand-knitted from a galvanized iron wire and a varnished iron wire by its creator Delphine Grandvaux. Referring to the growth of an organism, this three-part artwork is composed of cells, each of which contains a small red core that symbolizes the soul and gives life to the whole volume. Its shapes being flattened on the back, this mural sculpture is simply to be installed with one or two small nails per part. Its three parts can be arranged with more or less distance between them, in one direction or in the other. The depth of the parts is 3.15 inches, and the dimensions of the parts (eight-cell part, two-cell part, and one-cell part) are respectively: 35.4 inches x 20.8 inches, 15.7 inches x 15.7 inches, and 8.7 inches x 7.5 inches. The final dimensions of this artwork can vary since they will be defined by the way that its art-collector arrange the three parts. Delphine Grandvaux is a French sculptor. Motivated by her desire to create light and airy artworks, she found her way to express creatively in a unique artistic approach, based on a similar technique of mesh from the metal wire as Ruth Asawa. In the woven works of Delphine Grandvaux, the metallic threads, sometimes associated with other light materials like wood, wool, etc., seem to be tamed by the power of her technique and by her freedom of imagination. They transform themselves under the hands of the artiste into voluminous organic and dynamic forms, fine and refined, with fluid movements inside as well as outside the artwork. Playing with light and shadow, the transparent or semi-transparent forms created by the artist are truly evocative of poetry, delicacy, and elegance.
