Sperber’s research in the science of optics merges with her interest in art history to create pixilated, three-dimensional, inverted images of well known works by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Hans Holbein, Jan van Eyck, and Andy Warhol. The artist constructs these works out of hanging columns of spools of thread, which appear as colorful abstracts to the naked eye. Once viewed through the optical device, however, the work becomes immediately recognizable. Sperber deconstructs familiar images so that our brains can reconstruct them, the result being a truly convincing reproduction of the well-known painting.
