About the Item

This work titled " LITTLE RED HEN" measures 12" x 18" x 5 " and was created using wood, fibers, colored pencil, and embroidery. Diane Baker is a mixed media and fiber-related sculptor currently living and working in Buffalo, NY. She has exhibited her work throughout the United States and in Canada and is included in several public and private collections. Artist Statement: My art engages the viewer in looking, lingering, and responding. Although I use various methods of fiber manipulations that have historical origins relating to many ancient cultures, I never wanted to produce traditional tapestry. I love exploring change and growth – things that look one way and turn into something else. By manipulating the interplay of texture, color, line and shape, I find the final assembly contains a dialogue, which goes beyond its origin. From my eclectic accumulation of materials and objects, I imbue some with humor, nostalgia, joy, or unexpected weight, thus revealing old/new, quiet/unquiet, and soft/hard. In juxtaposing these incongruous assemblages, I am looking beyond the outer form for the suggestion of an inner meaning; to capture the magic in the “ordinary”.
