Eric Pesso
Spiral#2-Red, large maple sculpture, carved, painted elements

2020

About the Item

Large maple abstract sculpture, geometric spiral, created from one tree trunk. This sculpture is subtracted from the single block using primarily hand tools, not an assembled construction. Each work is meticulously crafted, taking months to complete. Eric Pesso is a largely self-taught wood sculptor working for the last 45 years in Brooklyn, New York. Aside from several abstract torsos, his work gravitates toward airy, free-flowing abstract forms with lots of movement and negative space. His background in mathematics informs much of his work; the works in this series are prime examples of his use of symmetry to create a sense of harmony amidst the chaos. These pieces also represent the first time he has used color to express his ideas. In 2012, the Brooklyn Museum sponsored the GO project, a borough-wide Open Studio Tour in which visitors were invited to vote on-line for their favorite artists. Of the 1800+ participating artists, Mr. Pesso was voted as one of the TOP TEN. In May, 2015, he won first prize for sculpture in the Salmagundi Club’s Juried Show in Greenwich Village.
