About the Item

Since graduating in 1992 with a BFA from the Hong-Ik University Jaehyo Lee (1965, Hapchen, Korea) has gained acclaim both in his native South Korea and internationally for his distinct yet intimately crafted oeuvre. Combining distinct traces of Land Art, Arte Povera and Minimalism Lee's works cast a questioning eye over the roots of form, its function and its role within the natural world. Lee's works willfully play with the oft-contested boundaries between contemporary art and design, referencing the idealist’s cubes, cylinders and cones as perversions of the chaise lounge, the coffee table, the lampshade, and even the humble doughnut. Revealing a subtly humorous and unsentimental attitude to nature, what unites these works is a belief that the beauty of art is a product of the labor from whence it comes, whether this be the meticulous carving of larch trunks into the form of a perfect sphere or, equally, the precise bending and sanding of thousands of nails hammered one after another into a hunk of cut lumber. Amongst many other distinctions Jaehyo was in 1998 Grand Prize Winner at the Osaka Triennial and in 2002 recipient of the prestigious Irish Sculpture in Woodland commission. His works are held in public and private collections across Europe, Asia and North America. Korean, b. 1965, Hapcheon, South Korea Korea, Outdoor Art, Drawing, Use of Common Materials, Work on Paper, Focus on Materials, Sculpture, Nature, Biomorphic, Line, Form and Color, Patterns, Calligraphic, Organic Material, Design, Text

    Located in Dallas, TX
In his abstract constructions, Alex Corno does not make art to repeat what is visible, to paraphrase Klee’s affirmation. He uses the formal language of materials and space: opposing thin arcs, rods, and loops with weighty rectilinear forms to achieve a dynamic balance. Corno welds his iron and stainless steel sculptures in a diverse range of scales, from small interior works to monumental garden...

  • Abstract Wall Sculpture "Synopsis" - Early Hologram Effect
    By Halvorsen Vever, Elsbeth
    Located in Soquel, CA
"Synopsis" by Elsbeth Halvorsen Vever (American, b. 1929). Box sculpture combines aluminum, sand, bone, glass and a magnifier. Signed "Elsbeth Vever 1982" on verso. Image, 24.50"L x 13.75"H x 4"W. Using bone as the central image Elsbeth has assembled an optical and visual experience. One view is the magnification and juxtaposition of the floating effect of the curvature in the stainless steel background; stand back and it's a hologram effect. The first image shows clearly the hologram effect available to the eye of the viewer. From a review of her show of box constructions in Providence, Rhode Island: "Viewing her box constructions is a lot like a walk in the moonlight. What we know, or think, to be true in the hard brightness of daytime reality dissolves into an amorphous space of multiple possibilities and perspectives." Born in Purdys, New York, Elspeth Halvorsen is the daughter, granddaughter, and mother of professional artists. She has studied at prestigious academic and artistic institutions includingthe New School for Social Research, the Art Students League, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1955, she moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts, establishing her home and studio in the former residence of Mark Rothko. Provincetown not only remains her home but also acts as a personal, social, and artistic source of inspiration for her work. Shortly after arriving in Provincetown, Halvorsen and her husband, the late Tony Vevers...
