About the Item

This raku ceramic vessel sculpture by Jon Puzzuoli is made with glazed porcelain. The base of the round body is a deep umber color with at texture and matte finish, while the top portion is a light off-white color with subtle "cracked" lines throughout and a dripping effect that runs over the darker umber. The cracked glaze covers the neck and mouth of the piece as well, but is finished in vibrant turquoise color. Raku generally refers to a type of low-firing process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing. Western-style raku usually involves removing pottery from the kiln while at bright red heat and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which affects the colors in glazes and clay bodies. The drastic thermal shock also produces cracking—known as crackling since it is deliberate. Jon Puzzuoli is a full time ceramicist of 16 years. His life is absorbed in clay, both creating and teaching. Jon’s passion emanates from educating others in the art of pottery. Jon is Head of the Ceramics Department at Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan and Co-Chair of it’s almost 300 Guild Artists. Developing unique glazes and growing crystals on the surface of his wares are a particular focus.
