Judy Rushin-Knopf
Textile Wall Sculpture: 'TRAVEL PILLOW'

2022

About the Item

This piece is from a new body of work called 'Vital Signs’ which will premiere at Ivy Brown Gallery in NYC and springs from the domain of hospitals and illness through combinations of hand-woven and tufted textiles and minimalist box-like objects that hang on walls or embed in the textiles themselves. The textiles refer to items of worn clothing, flattened identity, and superstition that come with illness and extended hospital stays. Their dominant color is blue, a hue known to calm the nervous system, but also the color of a failing body (cyanosis). The black and white objects - made of epoxy clay and punctuated with fluorescent green plexiglass – serve as comic stand-ins for the array of bizarre electrical outlets seen in hospital rooms. Judy Rushin-Knopf (1959) was born in Dallas Texas and lives in Tallahasee, FL. Her work addresses bodies, access, and connection. She has exhibited her paintings, sculptures, and textiles in museums and galleries across the US, including The Ringling Museum of Art, The Orlando Museum of Art, Alexander Brest Museum, Whitespace Gallery (Atlanta), Unrequited Leisure (Nashville), C For Courtside (Knoxville), Terrain Projects (Chicago). Her multiples projects vvvvv and Comma are in eleven private collections including Vanderbilt University, University of Wisconsin, MassArt, University of Pittsburgh, University of Southern California, Cal Poly University. Her work has been written about in Burnaway, Modern Art Notes, The Washington Post, and she is a residency fellow at MASS MoCA, VCCA, and Hambidge. Rushin is an Associate Professor at Florida State University, co-director of Comma, and co-director of The FSU Facility For Arts Research.

  • Medium Abstract Sculpture: 'Accepting'
    By Eileen Braun
    Located in New York, NY
During the COVID-19 lockdown, many faced swirling negative thoughts….. Atlanta sculptor, Eileen Braun, worked through the lockdown challenge and re-channeled that negative energy into her hands. As her hands cradled and examined the materials, her mind welcomed being in the moment and being grateful for what was. Those positive thoughts became her mantra while creating. Accepting change without judgement. On occasion, accepting the days that didn’t change, while the materials spoke anew. She explains that “the resulting forms display my interwoven emotions: quiet, complex, absorbed, relaxed, serious, playful, flirtatious, mothering, smothering and ultimately, joyful.” Her installation, OPEN SPACES: Espaces Ouverts, is a profusion of forms suspended in our two front facing plaza windows. As they float, sight lines...
