Drago — a pair of glass treasuries — volume IX no. 11 & 12

2019

About the Item

glass treasury, volume IX no.11&12, smoky gray Drago is a sculptural glassware that explores the concept of a treasury — the power of a container object to reflect the value of personally precious natural ingredients or material entities from the places dear to one’s heart. The name drago summons the image of a dragon. After all, the making process is a captivating play of three elements: fire, wood, and glass. The project is inspired by the form-making of nature. A series of experiments lead to an enhanced natural metamorphosis of the shape. While burning during the glassblowing process, the wooden mould changes continuously, resulting in a unique form and surface of each piece. Hand-crafted in Finland. Material: glass (lead-free crystal) and alder wood (up-cycled). Wood working and mould making, glass hot work and cold work: by the designer herself. Hot work, mouth blowing into a wooden mould: by the glass master. Moulds for glassblowing are made out of up-cycled local timber. The wood for the moulds is consciously selected by the designer to achieve a variety of structures. Hand-drawn shapes transformed with digital graphic tools and produced with industrial CNC machine. The shapes of the wooden lids are first hand-drawn, then fine-tuned in vector curves that are next transformed into 3D shapes and milled with a CNC machine from scrap wood material left after making glass moulds, and finally sanded and coated with organic bee wax mixed with Nordic berries. Each wooden lid is a unique pair to each unique glass piece, no shape is the same. _______________________________________________________ Katerina Krotenko is a Helsinki-based artist in vocation to work with heritage contexts.
