ON THE HUSTINGS (RISE) - Concrete Industrial Sculpture with Bamboo

2021

About the Item

In this piece, two breeze blocks stacked on top of one another make the base of the sculpture. On top of these breeze blocks is a flat, rectangular steel plate. On top of the steel plate are three corrugated concrete blocks. The bottom-most corrugated concrete block is laying on its widest side, and on top of this block are two more corrugated concrete blocks turned on their thinnest side. The corrugated, textured side of the concrete faces the viewer, and two long bamboo chutes rest in the valleys of the concrete bricks. Brian Russell Jobe (American, b. 1981) is an artist and non-profit director based in Knoxville, Tennessee. Jobe's studio practice is focused on sculpture, installation, and public art. His solo exhibitions have been on view at venues such as Mixed Greens Gallery (New York, NY), Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum (San Antonio, TX), University of Wyoming (Laramie, WY), Alabama Contemporary Art Center (Mobile, AL), and McNay Art Museum (San Antonio, TX). He has two permanent, outdoor sculptures located at the Western North Carolina Sculpture Park (Lenoir, NC) and Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum (Knoxville, TN). Jobe often creates schemes for public interaction through the delineation of pathways. His most recent work collages material into assemblages utilizing signifiers of natural and manufactured landscapes. The work is stacked, held in tension, or bound, but without the use of hardware or adhesives. He desires a sort of inevitability to be felt within the viewer’s experience as they consider the material’s history and stream-of-consciousness associations. He is inspired by the act of construction and the cross-section between reductive minimalism and human touch. Born in Houston, Texas and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Jobe received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Tennessee in 2004 and Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2006.

  • MIRROR - Contemporary - Geometric Abstract w/ Repurposed Construction Material
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
"Mirror" is a site specific installation that was exhibited in the show "Dialects of Place(s) by Land Report Collective at COOP Gallery in Nashville, TN. In this piece, Jobe uses industrial materials such as insulation foam, concrete, window screen, and graphite tracing paper to create a patterned structure that protrudes from the corner and carries the viewer's eye upward. At the bottom of the piece, we see delicately balanced concrete on top of pale blue insulation foam. The patterned concrete and insulation foam carries the viewer's eye upwards towards another pop of blue on top of the aluminum window screen frame. The screen gives the viewer a window in which to look through the piece. On one side, this mesh frames the graphite paper and on the other side the viewer can see the patterned concrete and insulation foam. Review from "The Rib" about "Mirror" One of the more surprising works here is Nashville-based Brian Jobe...

  • VERSO EQUIVALENCE 1 - acrylic, staples, pine wood, cut linen -Abstract geometric
    By Linda King Ferguson
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting by Linda King Ferguson is part of her equivalence series, which began as a feminist project; works that subvert the historically male gaze and a material language speaking of gendered concerns. While typically, King Ferguson paints both sides of the canvas and cuts a flap on the the frontside to reveal the color of the back of the canvas, she unexpectedly does the opposite here. The painting is hung from the "frontside" of the canvas, revealing to us the raw edges of her linen canvas, stapled to the stretchers. Two oblong shapes of pink and red dominate the center of the painting. A thin semioval cut has been made inside of both of these shapes. Her color choices first came from Helen Molesworth’s essay, Painting With Ambivalence, published in WACK! Art of the Feminist Revolution. The Essay includes a large reproduction of Mary Heilmann’s 1979 painting...
