About the Item

In Kurt Steger's series, Urban Structures, the flat planes of the plywood that are built up to hold the scribed contour of the boulder together create crystalline geometric forms, which contrast dramatically with the organic flow of the described surface. This formation echoes the juxtaposition of nature and the intervention of the human touch.Kurt Steger’s sculptures and architectural constructions address the interdependent relationship between man and his environment. Artist's Statement "I invite the spirit of my materials to speak to me, and following the flow of energy I allow the creative process to happen. In this sense I am but a facilitator, setting into motion an action, and then collaborating with air, wind, time, gravity, erosion, combustion, and any other natural processes that occur on my watch. " When an artist activates objects in the world he activates nature, and brings her message to a place of aesthetic resonance and positive societal change. In Steger's sculptures he will find a portion of a tree that has structure and elegance, and then adds to the natural direction of its growth. He may extend a branch so that it circles back upon itself, or truncate a limb to curtail its movement in space. Upon completion his sculpture becomes a co-creation with nature. The power of the entire forest rests in a single branch, trunk, or root, and this energy is carried into human-created spaces through my work. These trees have absorbed the sounds in the forest, and have witnessed the constant motion of life, death, and rebirth. Taking part in what is given, he engages his skills, and transports nature into the urban world. Society uses the term "man made" too simply. What is a man, to himself, to his community? What is his sense of responsibility to others and his accountability to the world, society, women, family, and friends? When a man makes something, it ought to matter. And when a man is made -- by his actions, intentions, and fulfillment of responsibilities – we should recognize the value of that making. A life force that isn't afraid of pain or of being vulnerable is awakened, and it can do great things. Biography Kurt's interest in psychology, shamanism, and the healing properties of art and nature are present throughout his work. Steger’s public large-scale works includes an environmental indoor sculpture for the City Hall in Sacramento, California (2005), a public commission to create the traffic circle in Grass Valley, California (2009), and in 2011 he led a healing ceremony at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., honoring the 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 bombings. Scribing the Void is Steger’s first solo exhibition presenting a monumentally scaled sculpture in New York City. Steger lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
