Stand-Ins for Period of Wreckage 25
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A sculpture by Theaster Gates. "Stand-Ins for Period of Wreckage 25" is a contemporary sculpture, white concrete and porcelain by American, Blue Chip artist Theaster Gates. The artwork is unsigned.
Theaster Gates' practice includes sculpture, installation, performance and urban interventions that aim to bridge the gap between art and life. Gates works as an artist, curator, urbanist and facilitator and his projects attempt to instigate the creation of cultural communities by acting as catalysts for social engagement that leads to political and spatial change.
Gates has described his working method as “critique through collaboration” – often with architects, researchers and performers – to create works that stretch the idea of what we usually understand visual-based practices to be. For his exhibition at Milwaukee Art Museum exhibition in 2010, for example, Gates invited a 250 strong gospel choir into the galleries to sing songs adapted from the inscriptions on pots by the famous 19th century slave and potter 'Dave Drake'. For the 2010 Whitney Biennial, Gates transformed the Whitney’s Sculpture Court with a spare, architectural installation that functioned as a communal gathering space for performances, social engagement, and contemplation. For the duration of the exhibition Gates collaborated with various creative practitioners on a series of 'monastic residencies', holding live events such as the session by Gates' musical ensemble, the Black Monks of Mississippi. In another recent exhibition at Seattle Art Museum, Gates transformed the gallery into an audio archive entitled 'The Listening Room', incorporating a hand-built DJ...

“Growing out of my ribcage..” Growing out of my ribcage, just to let your softness multiply into a whole sky of lush clouds crowning the forest, so we can become a jungle dense with life.
“My darling..” My darling your words are often too sharp , and I am always too soft. But as long as you bring me honey and ginger to sweeten and strengthen my body, my wounds. I will always bring the softness to your hard edges. We will blur into each other creating a malleable thing. You will always bring me your backbone, so I can know how to stand up straight (alone). Green twirls flowers. Glazed ceramic abstract jar sculpture
By Charo Oquet
Located in Miami Beach, FL
Green twirls flowers, by Charo Oquet
Glazed Ceramic
18” x 16” x 14”
2018
These gravity-defying ceramics stacked constructions struggle to soar beyond the boundaries of the spaces that contain them, often appearing to teeter in the brink of collapse. They are essentially diasporic, coming from various territorial and conceptual geographies that are the instruments of connection between today and the past and a new future. I try to create pieces where a process of mestizaje capable of arming dissident ways of live, intertwined with my family history.
The colors, bright, chaotic, disruptive of a rich tropical load, bright light, universe of the Caribbean pallet, have archetypal symbols connected to the African heritage, visual party made plastic, symphonic permanence, with a transmission of joy, cheerful feelings that evoke directly the therapeutic action of planting, building and maintaining a garden, in this case, a permanent garden, which is mud in a state of crystallization (ceramics).

Biomorphic Blue No 11 - smooth, pigmented Winterstone, abstract sculpture
Located in Bloomfield, ON
The natural world inspires the beautiful organic forms of artist Jana Osterman. This deep blue patinated winterstone sculpture suggests the shape and movement of tree roots. It is polished with a protective wax giving it a light sheen.
“Tree roots hold traces and impressions of where they held on but still suggest the smooth, and continuous movement, the flow of water." Jana Osterman
Born in Slovenia, Osterman moved to Holland where she studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. She continued with printmaking studies in England. For the last 20 years, Osterman has worked as a full-time artist and fabricator in Canada, first in Toronto and now in Prince Edward County...
