Paula Murray
Paula Murray studied ceramics at Sheridan College and completed a residency at the Banff Centre before launching a successful career. She has received multiple grants and awards from the Ontario Crafts Council, the Canada Council and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. She has completed many public commissions, including pieces for the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards. Murray's ceramics have been gifted by the Canadian government to dignitaries such as U.S. President George W. Bush and UN Secretary Kofi Annan. Her work is held in private, corporate and public collections, including Canadian Museum of Civilization, the Banff Centre, the Gardiner Museum and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. In 2006, Murray was elected member of the RCA. In 2017, she was elected member of the International Academy of Ceramics.

While in China, Small’s porcelain forms developed as visual communicators, in a culture where he didn’t speak the language. Like tattoos, Small’s glaze imagery of colorful Chinese trucks, buses, traditional motifs, nature and ornament float on the skin of his two primary porcelain forms, Talk Bubbles and Ghosts. Small’s steel chandeliers contain echoes of the opulent past of the 17th & 18th century, but have been set free of function and the restraint of tradition. Constructed of filigreed steel cut by computer controlled machines, the chandeliers are composed of “fins” of metal lace, hinged around a central axis. Small’s chandeliers are suspended sculptures that question the origins of ornamental habits. Major stylistic revolutions such as Bauhaus or Pop demolish definitions and use of ornament, but many old habits slip through the cracks. Drawing from a love for the wood-fired ceramic surface, Perry looks to anticipate the manner in which ash in the kiln will collect in different arrays across the convex and concave surfaces of his gestural clay forms. “I approach making with a childlike spirit of experimentation and exploration. My work stems from a love of the wood fired ceramic surface, particularly how it evokes many beautiful natural phenomena. Like imagining the way wind gathers and deposits leaves on a landscape according to changes in topography, I anticipate the manner in which ash will collect differently on the convex and concave surfaces of my gestural forms.
