Robert Montgomery
Whenever You See the Sun

About the Item

Inspired by the graffiti artists of East London, the poetry of Philip Larkin, the philosophy of Guy Debord, and the French student protesters of May 1968, Robert Montgomery’s text-based conceptual works are both cryptic and emotionally resonant. Montgomery began his career making minimalist sculptures with long, poetic titles. Eventually, he phased out objects altogether. In his current works, he writes verses such as “THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE BECOME GHOSTS INSIDE OF YOU AND LIKE THIS YOU KEEP THEM ALIVE” on billboards, light fixtures, woodcuts, and watercolors. His pieces often convey anti-capitalist statements, but the messages transcend politics. “The purpose of art is to touch the hearts of strangers without the trouble of having to meet them,” Montgomery says. By Jaehyo Lee
    Located in Solana Beach, CA
Since graduating in 1992 with a BFA from the Hong-Ik University Jaehyo Lee (1965, Hapchen, Korea) has gained acclaim both in his native South Korea and internationally for his distinct yet intimately crafted oeuvre. Combining distinct traces of Land Art, Arte Povera and Minimalism Lee's works cast a questioning eye over the roots of form, its function and its role within the natural world. Lee's works willfully play with the oft-contested boundaries between contemporary art and design, referencing the idealist’s cubes, cylinders and cones as perversions of the chaise lounge, the coffee table, the lampshade, and even the humble doughnut. Revealing a subtly humorous and unsentimental attitude to nature, what unites these works is a belief that the beauty of art is a product of the labor from whence it comes, whether this be the meticulous carving of larch trunks into the form of a perfect sphere or, equally, the precise bending and sanding of thousands of nails hammered one after another into a hunk of cut lumber. Amongst many other distinctions Jaehyo was in 1998 Grand Prize Winner at the Osaka Triennial and in 2002 recipient of the prestigious Irish Sculpture...

  • "Salon 13" is a collection of 13 small mixed media pieces with electric lighting
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
“Salon (13)“ is a collection of 13 small-scale works by artist Heather Nicol. The installation of 13 assemblages is variable. The artist will personally consult with the buyer and can be on site for the installation. The 13 mixed media pieces include delicate lighting elements that shift and change via arduino electronic devices, or utilize picture lights throwing a soft roll of light across the artwork. These works are linked through their wiring, which is enveloped in a white umbilical cord-like fabric casing, creating an organic, unifying code of display. Heather Nicol is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes immersive sound installation, small-scale discrete object making, and independent curating. Her large site-specific interventions explore the architectural, sonic, historic and operational conditions across a wide range of locations. These include concourse atriums, rail terminus, lobbies, a theatre, a public school building, a theme park...
