About the Item

The Raven is a figurative bronze sculpture by French artist Romain Langlois, representing the face of a young man with long hair, his facial features engraved with a traditional tattoo. Dimensions are 64 × 30 × 31 cm (25.2 × 11.8 × 12.2 in) The sculptor’s figurative works are distinguished by their subtle interpretation of the human form. Though they appear realistic at first glance, they incorporate unexpected details that infuse the pieces with a poetic and thought-provoking dimension. Rather than merely imitating reality, these sculptures delve into the deep connection between humanity and its surroundings — between people and the natural world. This particular piece portrays a young Haida man with remarkable delicacy. The Haida are an Indigenous First Nations people from the Haida Gwaii archipelago, located off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. Celebrated for their rich artistic traditions, they are known for creating monumental totem poles, ceremonial masks, and intricately carved sculptures. Their distinctive visual language often features stylised animal figures, notably the raven — Yáahl — a central character in Haida mythology who embodies both mischief and creation. The sculpture takes its name from the two raven tattoos engraved on the young man’s cheeks, directly cast in bronze. Each new edition of the piece allows these tattoos to be personalised and reimagined. The work pays tribute to the Haida people, whose identity and culture are profoundly intertwined with their land. Romain Langlois has gained recognition for his singular approach to bronze sculpture, transforming the material to evoke the textures of rock or wood. Yet beyond his technical mastery lies a poetic intention: by reinterpreting natural forms, he elevates the everyday into the extraordinary. His works are included in major art collections (Matmut, Fondation Bullukian) and have been exhibited in renowned institutions such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (2017). They have also inspired significant international commissions.

Solid Bronze Greek Mythology Sculpture by Carl Payne 'Sunburst Mask'
By Carl Payne
Located in Shrewsbury, Shropshire
'Sunburst Mask' is a solid bronze sculpture by Carl Payne inspired by Greek mythology. Carl Payne is a hugely talented sculptor, focusing predominantly on the female form he often uses his wife, a professional dancer, as his muse. Continuing a successful career in England and Ireland, Carl joined Callaghan Fine Paintings and Works of Art at the beginning of 2004 in order to dedicate his time to create and develop stunning individual contemporary sculpture. Carl is a Staffordshire based sculptor for whom art has played a large part in his academic work taking him through the Burslem School of Art, the Henry Doulton School of Sculpture and then to Stafford College. After qualifying in Figurative Sculpture he launched his career with commission after commission, which has now secured his reputation for fine quality workmanship both in life-size format and smaller decorative pieces. The list of his completed commissioned work is extensive, including many ‘house-hold’ names from the sporting world, commerce and the past. The following are just some of the private and publicly commissioned completed works that form Carl’s prestigious portfolio:- King George 5th and Queen Mary – life size portrait buste commissioned by Cunards Cruise Ships and located in the ballroom of the Queen Mary 2 (QM2) cruise ship.
