About the Item

Shayne Dark is a Hartington, Ontario-based contemporary visual artist who has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally since he began his artistic career in the mid 1980’s. Taking a keen interest in every aspect of the process of art production – insisting on the latter to the detriment of the finished object – his sculptural installations draws upon and focuses on the physical and perceptual experience we have of our environment. Meant to stimulate a spiritual or visceral reaction in the viewer, his works are a site of tension and often evoke the contrasts between the cultural and the natural worlds, industrial and organic materials, as well as between the notions of permanence and movement, space and time.

  • À géométrie variables
    By Karine Payette
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
Working primarily in the medium of installation, but also that of photography and video, Karine Payette creates fictional environments that function as freeze frames in which narratives are suspended. In her work, she uses everyday objects to construct extensive dream-like scenes in a hyperrealist manner. These mises-en-scène serve to hint at a potential narrative which evokes the precariousness of our surrounding world. Through the playful use of everyday objects that are transposed into extraordinary situations, she craftily toys with our vision of things, so as to stimulate reflection about the instability of the materials and forms which are part of our living environments. She questions notions of comfort and displeasure in a perpetually transforming world. Karine Payette, who holds a MFA from UQAM, lives and works in Montreal. Her works have been displayed in solo exhibitions, notably at the Galerie de l’UQAM (Confort instable, 2012) and at Le lieu, Centre en art actuel in Quebec City (L’autre dimanche matin...

  • Chesapeake Blue
    By Jeremy Thomas
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
"These inflated objects are grown more than fabricated. Through the process of inflation, the application of the air to the geometric construction defines form at the moment of inflation." It is the pragmatic that draws Thomas. Asked about his influences he asserts that his primary influences do not come from the realm of art but rather from everyday living. “I don’t eat, sleep, and breathe art,” he comments. His discovery of metal-working arose in a similar, practical way. Thomas had been sculpting with stone and asked someone to show him how to forge his own chisel. This was the start of his exploration of forging techniques and after a time he gave up working with stone to work with metal. One of the key aspects of blacksmithing that intrigued Thomas was fact that it isn’t instantly gratifying, and it poses questions that aren’t easily solved. He interned with Tom Joyce...
