Richard Sturgeon
Regroup, large stainless steel and stone spiral abstract sculpture, 2021

2021

About the Item

The sculpture entitled "Regroup" is a large continuous, twisting and curving mass of stainless steel, bent and formed by hand by Richard Sturgeon in his studio in London, Ontario. This large piece evokes a swirling cyclone of energy but also simultaneously feels light and airy due to the viewers ability to see through it at multiple angles and the playfulness of its composition. Richard Sturgeon creates interpretive abstract and landscape sculpture, influenced by contrasts between natural and urban environments and a life shared between the dramatic landscapes of northern Ontario and the developed regions of the province’s southwest. In it the artist examines the essence of our relationships; to one another, to one's own make up and to our surroundings. His approach incorporates elements of suggested motion and spatial relation in miniature to large scale commissions. Richard's sculpture can be found internationally in private and public collections and fine galleries. “The essence of my work lies in breaking form into its most basic and necessary lines, revealing the purist of attitudes and emotions of the subject of a sculpture. I’m drawn to the methods of sculpting in metal where harsh industrial processes performed on a cold and rigid medium can yield an air of elegance, softness and beauty.”

  • Mandala Zooxanthellae, Modern Canadian Glass Sculpture, 2019
    Located in Toronto, ON
This work of art is inspired by the tiny plant-like organisms called zooxanthellae live in the tissues of many animals including corals, anemones, jellyfish, sponges and foraminifera. These microscopic algae capture sunlight and convert it into energy just like plants to provide essential nutrients to the corals. When under stress, such as high temperature caused by global warming of the oceans and seas, they will die and leave their host, a process known as bleaching. Alex Anagnostou...
