About the Item

Suzan Shutan leans left and favors using industrially manufactured materials to best describe her world views. Raised in Connecticut, Shutan has worked in many studios in the converted old factory buildings that are prevalent throughout the Housatonic and Naugatuck River valleys. These buildings evidence the see saw history of economic development and its environmental and social impact in New England. Shutan’s work is the visual equivalent of pop music. Not mainstream, but the real deal, the underground. Music that makes us want to have sex, like Prince, Tom Waits, Big Brother and the Holding Company. Music that crosses boundaries, mixes it all up, ever constant in its middle finger salute to the status quo. Suzan Shutan’s work, at a surface glance is colorful, funny, candid, brazen, ugly and references multitudinous things all at once. Ranging from social concerns like public health, politics, #metoo, and the environment, Shutan delivers a one-two punch. First to the eyes, with pop color and movement, then to the mind, as we ponder her surprising choice of materials, and then BAM! a punch to the heart, often expressed through the materials themselves, higher math, and a low-brow mash up of forensics and theory. Shutan covers it ALL! From salon life in the 19th century to Kabbalah to comics, and she thinks the word boob is funny! Her inclusion of body image into this installation about Madam Blavtsky’s creation riffs on concepts that circle back on themselves. Shutan’s work is as much about infinity as it is about everyday life played out by ordinary people in real time. This oscillating between micro/eye-level views and macro ideology is what makes me think of the best examples of popular music. The medium is the message. Cleverly disguised as pop art, its roots run more towards Fluxus and Dada than to representational art. So, it is left to the viewer pay attention to the materials used and to ask themselves questions how these materials were manufactured, where, and by which companies. Then she takes it to the next level, reporting on whether they cleaned up their mess in those rivers, what are the cancer rates in those affected locations, who profited and for how much. Of our world, Suzan Shutan leads us through an engaging narrative, inviting at first, but then stuck in memory due to the urgency of its purpose in telling these tales of deceit, greed, and a misguided compass. Influenced overall by the Kabbalah, she is trying to make “good” in her work. A healing within oneself can be extracted from her artwork. So look, reach for a universe of associations, and turn it all inward to decide how you feel, and whether you’re being called to action. An MFA graduate of Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts, New Brunswick, NJ and BFA graduate of California Institute of the arts, Valencia, CA, Suzan is a recipient of many awards. They include a 2012-13 CT artist fellowship in Sculpture, a CEC Artslink grant, Art Matters grant, Berkshire Taconic Foundation A.R.T grant and a Federal Public Art Project.finalist. She has attended artist residencies at Bemis Foundation NE, Yaddo NY and Proyecto Ace in Buenos Aires, Argentina where she was awarded a mid career artist in exhibition residency. Shutan's work has been shown throughout the United States and Europe. In 2014 Suzan was invited by Zacheta National Gallery of Contemporary Art, Warsaw, Poland to create a six month 6 room and hallway installation ending in 2015. Her work has been included in the 2013 Biennial Internationale d’art non objective Pont de Claix in Grenoble, France, the International Kunst Tentoonstelling in Groningen, Holland and in 2012 at Le Hang’Art, Grenoble, France in the Contemporary Art International and in Hamburg Rathaus & Kunstlerhaus Dosenfabrik, Hambery, Germany. In 2016 her work was part of a three month exhibition at The Kaneko Org in Omaha NE, Coagula Curatorial in Los Angles, CA, Sideshow Gallery, NY, UMass Amherst Hampden Gallery and featured at ODETTA in Brooklyn, NY. In 2012 a twenty- foot relief sculpture made of tar roofing paper was on exhibit for one year at the Bank of America Plaza in Charlotte North Carolina, Suzan Shutan’s work has been favorably reviewed by the NY Times, Art New England Magazine and High Performance Magazine among noted art papers. In 2015 her work was published in Paper Art Installations ll by ArtPower International Publishing Company Ltd,Hong Kong,China (Interior & Architectural Design Book) in a 6 page spread, and in Post Road Literary Book , Boston, MA, Issue 24. Shutan's work can be found in private and public collections such as the Villa Taverna Foundation, University of California Los Angles and at the Swedish Archives in Bjaard. She teaches Sculpture & Portfolio Review at Housatonic Community College in Connecticut and is a mentor for MFA students in low residency programs in the Northeast USA. The artist lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut.
