Smurf #56

2004

About

Defying the confines of their Lasa marble medium, the amorphous sculptures of the artistic duo Venske & Spänle evoke the forms of primordial creatures. The artists’ human-like marble companions invite viewers to explore the interaction between human beings and the sculptural environment. Their 2003 installation The Yard at the Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, NY received wide recognition. Venske & Spänle have also exhibited internationally with recent solo shows at: Museo de Bellas Artes, Valencia, Spain; Margaret Thatcher Projects, New York, NY; Conny Deitzschold Gallery, Sydney, Australia; Kunsterverein Aichach, Aichach, Germany and Marcia Wood Gallery, Atlanta, GA. Two comprehensive guides to their artwork have also been published and reviews of their work can be found in NY Arts Magazine, The New York Times, New York Contemporary Art Report and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Venske & Spänle received their Diplomas of Stone Sculptures in Lasa, Italy and have also studied in India and Bolivia. The artists currently divide their time between studios in New York and Munich.
