Artist Biography
Chen Wenling is a contemporary Chinese Neo-Realist artist. Through a variety of surreal, often grotesque sculptures—most often executed in a bright monochrome red—he examines the rapid rise of consumerism in modern-day China and the fraught relationship with its more austere Communist past. Among the recurring characters in Chen’s work are emaciated young boys, pig-like humanoids, and obese demons, all of which the artist deploys to create his biting social satire. Born in 1969 in Quanzhou, China to a poor family, he went on to study at Xiamen Academy of Art. He quickly found international critical and commercial success, with his work exhibited both within China and abroad at the Guangzhou Art Museum, the Duolun Museum of Modern Art, and Basel Switzerland. In 1999, Chen won the Venice Biennale’s top prize, the prestigious Golden Lion. He continues to exhibit around the world and lives and works in Beijing, China.

- Ceramic Gold-Plating Sculpture-Series Animal Zodiac- DragonLocated in Beijing, CNThe sculpture is signed and numbered. Edition 20/99. About the Artwork: The Chinese Zodiac can’t be ignored in the traditional culture of China. It’s closely interconnected with the social customs and habits, the aesthetic taste and the opinion of value. The Twelve animals of Year represent the traditional Chinese wisdom that the laws of Nature governs all things and that man must seek harmony with Nature. I created this Series of twelve zodiac animals made of gold and pottery, trying to give the “zodiac”-this long-standing cultural symbols a meaning of the prosperity and the luckiness. –He Wenjue About the artist: He Wenjue was born in 1970 in Hunan Province, China. - Abyssal ShrinesBy Sarah Louise DaveyLocated in Philadelphia, PAThis is an original, unique ceramic sculpture by Sarah Louise Davey on a black wooden base. The piece measures 44” x 19” x 21”. Please note: This piece is pictured with the base on top of a black pedestal and a white pedestal. The black base of the sculpture is included, but the pedestals are not included. Artist Statement: "The art of making, for me, is very much a response to the human condition of needing to connect to one another, as well as to what lies just beyond the borders of our realities. I am drawn to the idea that art can have the ability to affect those who look upon it, allowing these portraits to be conduits to a realm within our subconscious. Although my females are hard ceramic sculptures, their hollow, eggshell-like interiors feel like a glove or a mask that can easily be slipped on and off, like the psychic armor of a distant self. An introspective dialogue is started as I make each piece, invoking a surreal understanding of the physical and emotional auras of these strange beauties. Heavy in symbolism, they illustrate the psychological scope of a hybrid creature. Their wide-eyed gazes are meant to portray an emotional duality that is constantly evolving. Some are alter egos of women on the verge...Category
