Dale Dunning
Press - tall, steam-punk inspired, human face, lead, aluminum and iron sculpture

2017

About the Item

This steam-punk inspired metal sculpture incorporates Dunning's mask motif in metal print typeface and a re-purposed cast iron squeeze jolt molding machine. This machine was used to press sand in a flask around a pattern for molds used by foundries. The powerful 6.5 foot tall indoor sculpture incorporates enigmatic narrative with the aesthetic of 19th century industrial machinery. This work weighs approximately 2000 pounds (900 KG). Consideration must be given to weight for shipping and installation. Dale Dunning holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. While earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Mt. Alison University, he studied under Lawren P. Harris (son of Group of Seven member Lawren S. Harris) and George Tiessen. Dunning has exhibited across Canada and his work is held in private, corporate and public collections including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, McIntosh Gallery at Western University, Carleton University Art Collection, and the National Library of Canada. "The head that I employ in most of my work is generic…I look on them as a mirror which reflects back the observer’s experience in new combinations and associations." Dale Dunning

FRANKIE SAYS RELAX series. (Frankie Goes to Hollywood is a very popular British band popular. The group's 1983 debut single Relax was banned by the BBC in 1984 while at number six in the charts and subsequently topped the UK Singles Chart for five consecutive weeks, going on to enjoy prolonged chart success throughout that year and ultimately becoming the seventh best selling UK single of all time. ) According to the artist; The idleness save the world, everything will begin one day by not going to work. In ancient Athena, working was attributed only to the slaves. As for today, the monopolies who direct world politics and economy, do not eschew from provoking war for their own interests, and make people ill and then dooms to medicine have created their own modern slaves of consumption with their so-called aims of development, growth and welfare society.
