David Hostetler
David Hostetler Jazz Singer Carved Pale Wood Sculpture Female Contemporary

2002

About the Item

Jazz Singer V is carved white oak from David Hostetler's Ohio property. It was inspired by his wife Susan, who would sing in Club Davd- his jazz club attached to his art studio. Part of a series of Jazz singer sculptures, all carved in wood first, some were then cast in bronze. It is the first series with the extended "gown" form. The curves in this sculpture all flow to give it a dynamic stance- you can feel her belting out a song! Great for a credenza or entry way. Dynamic form. Signature along the bottom edge of the sculpture. David said he was done with white oak after this sculpture,,, too hard to carve!!! Made by the hand of a master carver. Rare in this mass computer driven world, no AI, no machines, a mallet and gouge and 69 years of carving experience!
